Green Bay Packers

A solid, sensible weekend for the Packers: B-.

They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Maema Njongmeta, 74 picks early at the 255th overall pick.

They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They banked enough surplus on Melton to cover a lot of smaller sins.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.27 · Pick 27 · Cooper DeJean · CB · rank 26
In slot 27 they get a lockdown presence outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.23 · Pick 55 · Kris Jenkins · DL-EDGE · rank 50
Kris Jenkins at the 55th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 57
By-the-book stuff, Payton Wilson at No. 58 squarely in line with his ranking. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Max Melton · CB · rank 76
A quiet steal in the 88th pick: Max Melton for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · Dadrion Taylor-Demerson · S · rank 86
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson in the Round 3 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Gabriel Murphy · DL-EDGE · rank 92
No drama and no debate, Gabriel Murphy went about where he belonged in pick 91. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.26 · Pick 126 · Roger Rosengarten · OT · rank 135
Roger Rosengarten in pick No. 126 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.22 · Pick 158 · Marist Liufau · LB · rank 166
A reach on Marist Liufau in No. 158; the board had better options right there. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
R5.33 · Pick 169 · Tanor Bortolini · C · rank 187
A big swing on Tanor Bortolini at the 169th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
R6.23 · Pick 198 · Garret Greenfield · OT · rank 216
A wild overpay on Garret Greenfield in the Round 6 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.27 · Pick 202 · Dominique Hampton · S · rank 234
They talked themselves into Dominique Hampton at pick 202, and the board did not agree. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R6.44 · Pick 219 · Austin Reed · QB · rank 274
They reached a country mile for Austin Reed at slot 219, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.25 · Pick 245 · Jalen Sundell · OT · rank 246
Jalen Sundell in Round 7, Pick 25 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.35 · Pick 255 · Maema Njongmeta · LB · rank 329
Maema Njongmeta at the 255th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
