The trade table was where it all came apart. The Dolphins shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. If Powers-Johnson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 28 they get a cornerstone up front, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
Edgerrin Cooper at No. 54 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A straight-up fair deal on Roman Wilson at the 75th pick, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Nelson Ceaser in the 109th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Chau Smith-Wade in slot 155 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Julian Pearl in Round 6, Pick 11 is fair value, right on his grade. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
Christian Jones at pick No. 199 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They went early on Jordan Magee in the Round 6 slot, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
By-the-book stuff, Braiden McGregor at the 208th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
