The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.

That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They will answer for taking linebacker early while tight end and interior defensive lineman went begging.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.2 · Pick 2 · Drake Maye · QB · rank 6
In the Round 1 slot they get the face of the franchise at fair value. A real need, handled.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Jordan Morgan · OT · rank 27
Jordan Morgan slid further than he should have, and the 36th pick is lovely value for the offensive lineman. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Devontez Walker · WR · rank 42
Devontez Walker at the 40th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Jonathon Brooks · RB · rank 75
They paid sticker price for Jonathon Brooks in Round 3, Pick 12, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 112
The board had cheaper options than Cooper Beebe at pick 100, and it noticed. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 115
A conviction pick on Junior Colson at pick No. 102 that the board grades a round light. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R4.13 · Pick 113 · Cedric Gray · LB · rank 119
They bypassed pressing needs at tight end and interior defensive lineman to take Cedric Gray, a linebacker that was not the priority.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · Sincere Haynesworth · C · rank 154
Sincere Haynesworth at slot 141 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Justin Eboigbe · DL-EDGE · rank 180
No edge and no loss on Justin Eboigbe in the 181st overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Zion Nelson · OT · rank 212
Zion Nelson at the 223rd pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.13 · Pick 233 · Fentrell Cypress II · CB · rank 233
Fentrell Cypress II in pick 233 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
