Miami Dolphins

A costly weekend of dealing drags the Dolphins to a D-.

There is reaching, and then there is Matthew Jones at slot 223. The Dolphins jumped the board by 31 and dared it to prove them wrong.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

James at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.23 · Pick 23 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 29
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a building block for the line at fair value.
R2.23 · Pick 55 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 43
The board had Payton Wilson higher than pick No. 55, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 74
They paid sticker price for Xavier Legette in slot 75, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.7 · Pick 107 · DJ James · CB · rank 87
DJ James at the Round 4 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R5.7 · Pick 143 · Brennan Jackson · DE-EDGE · rank 152
A premium they did not need to pay, Brennan Jackson a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Kitan Oladapo · S · rank 156
A straight-up fair deal on Kitan Oladapo at the 157th pick, value and slot in agreement. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R6.11 · Pick 186 · Kendall Milton · RB · rank 190
They took Kendall Milton at par in the 186th pick, which is nothing to complain about. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.25 · Pick 200 · Myles Murphy · DL · rank 219
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Myles Murphy well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Matthew Jones · OG · rank 254
They left a pile of value on the table to take Matthew Jones this early at the 223rd overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
