There is reaching, and then there is Matthew Jones at slot 223. The Dolphins jumped the board by 31 and dared it to prove them wrong.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
James at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a building block for the line at fair value.
The board had Payton Wilson higher than pick No. 55, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid sticker price for Xavier Legette in slot 75, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
DJ James at the Round 4 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor need, but a need all the same.

They took Kendall Milton at par in the 186th pick, which is nothing to complain about. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Myles Murphy well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Matthew Jones this early at the 223rd overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
