Nobody had Jaden Shirden this high, and it is not close. The Dolphins reached 84 spots to get him at No. 198. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 21 they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Kiran Amegadjie at slot 55 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They went early on Brandon Dorlus in the 70th pick, and the value did not follow. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They jumped the gun on Cedric Gray, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A need, and now a little less of one.
Javion Cohen at the Round 5 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. It fills a real need, too.
Tanor Bortolini at pick No. 184 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They talked themselves into Jaden Shirden at the 198th pick, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Kalen DeLoach in pick 241 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
