The Chargers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Leonard Taylor III at the 69th overall pick regardless, 43 picks early.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Joe Alt in No. 5, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Xavier Worthy at pick No. 37 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Leonard Taylor III at slot 69 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They took Khyree Jackson at par in the 105th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They liked Jaylen Wright enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 5 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jaylen Harrell in the 183rd pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Value said wait; Dwight McGlothern in slot 226 says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
