The rest of the league had time to spare on Aki Ogunbiyi; the Giants did not wait, grabbing him 33 spots ahead at pick 183. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. So much rides on Jayden Daniels that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him.
That safety hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The roster is better shaped than it was, with interior defensive lineman chief among the fixes.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, safety very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th overall pick they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Josh Newton at pick No. 37, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Troy Franklin in Round 2, Pick 9 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No drama and no debate, Chris Braswell went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Byron Murphy II at No. 69 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Matt Goncalves. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Audric Estime in slot 109 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Connor Colby in pick 142 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Aki Ogunbiyi in No. 183 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
