Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Terrance Ferguson, the No. 122 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 5 slot. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They will need Stackhouse to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. That linebacker hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Good work on the whole, with linebacker the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get protection for the quarterback, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on TreVeyon Henderson at slot 51, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Alfred Collins at the Round 3 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Andrew Mukuba at No. 85 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Steal is underselling it; Ajani Cornelius at pick No. 150 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nazir Stackhouse in pick 170 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
Taking Terrance Ferguson in the 172nd overall pick is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
They read the board right and Earnest Greene III was the payoff at the 174th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They let Quincy Riley come to them and pounced at the 190th overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, JJ Pegues at Round 6, Pick 21. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Trevor Etienne in No. 211 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They barely believed it either: Theo Wease Jr. still on the board at slot 249. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
