When a board-topper like Damien Martinez slides to Round 6, Pick 33, you do not overthink it, and the Cowboys did not.
The Truss reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 12 they get an anchor for the defensive front, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Jalon Walker at the 44th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A big swing on Cam Skattebo at Round 3, Pick 12, well ahead of any board in the building. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A tidy bit of business in slot 150, where Rylie Mills graded well above the range. A need, and now a little less of one.
Steal is underselling it; Anthony Belton at pick No. 170 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Nick Nash in the 172nd pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Circle this one: Jeffrey Bassa at pick 174 is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They barely believed it either: Jack Nelson still on the board at the Round 6 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Damien Martinez in the 211th overall pick, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
A wild overpay on Xavier Truss in the Round 7 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
