Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Packers were there to profit. Xavier Legette, the No. 38 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 74th pick. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
They will need Watson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
Amarius Mims at No. 27 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Kris Jenkins at the Round 2 slot is money in the bank, a edge rusher taken below his worth. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Xavier Legette in slot 74 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A quiet steal in the 79th pick: Jaylen Wright for less than the market said. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kamren Kinchens at pick 88 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Cedric Gray at the 91st overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A straight-up fair deal on Zak Zinter at Round 4, Pick 4, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Ben Sinnott at pick No. 109 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board had Elijah Jones higher than slot 126, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A tidy bit of business in the 162nd pick, where Kitan Oladapo graded well above the range. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Nothing to complain about; Marist Liufau went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A conviction pick on Drake Nugent at the 202nd overall pick that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Trente Jones in pick 219 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A cornerback of that caliber at Round 7, Pick 25 is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Blake Watson. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
