The Cowboys torched the value chart for John Williams, taking him 68 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
The Bassa pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th overall pick they get a disruptor off the edge. Need was not the driver here.
A straight-up fair deal on Aireontae Ersery at Round 2, Pick 12, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They will replay TreVeyon Henderson at the Round 3 slot for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board fumbled Isaiah Bond all the way to pick No. 110, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Vernon Broughton in No. 170, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
You do not let a linebacker like Jeffrey Bassa reach slot 172 and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, John Williams well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Taking Jay Higgins in pick No. 211 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 249th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
