There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Patriots started one anyway for Eric Gentry, 109 picks ahead of schedule. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. On value alone, Caldwell makes the weekend a net positive.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 31 they get a weapon on the perimeter at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and D'Angelo Ponds at slot 63 is the proof. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kaleb Proctor in the 95th overall pick, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They let Michael Trigg come to them and pounced at No. 131. A need, and now a little less of one.
No drama and no debate, Aamil Wagner went about where he belonged in the Round 5 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Ephesians Prysock slid further than he should have, and the 202nd pick is lovely value for the cornerback. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Jeff Caldwell in Round 6, Pick 31 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Logan Taylor in slot 238 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A wild overpay on Eric Gentry in pick 247, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
