Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Patriots spent the 220th overall pick on Barryn Sorrell, a name most had 95 spots down the list. This is how you run a draft, and the A- reflects it.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. On value alone, Horton makes the weekend a net positive.
Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Few war rooms will sleep better than this one tonight.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get protection for the quarterback, even if it was a touch early. A real need, handled.
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Booker at pick 38 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jared Ivey at the 58th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They went early on Barrett Carter in No. 69, and the value did not follow. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Quinshon Judkins slid further than he should have, and pick No. 77 is lovely value for the running back. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jacob Parrish in Round 4, Pick 4 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Somehow Tory Horton was still sitting there in pick No. 144, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Ty Hamilton at No. 217 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A real head-scratcher, Barryn Sorrell in Round 7, Pick 4 is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They reached into another round for Cooper Mays, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
