A mixed bag for the Texans, and a C to match.

The rest of the league had time to spare on Jared Wiley; the Texans did not wait, grabbing him 33 spots ahead at Round 5, Pick 27.
The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots still on the board. That Jackson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 23 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a disruptor off the edge, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No drama and no debate, Edgerrin Cooper went about where he belonged in No. 58. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots still to address, they spent slot 90 on Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE they were not short of.
Somehow Khyree Jackson was still sitting there in the 123rd pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They went early on Malik Mustapha in the 126th overall pick, and the value did not follow. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jared Wiley well ahead of where he belonged. It fills a real need, too.
They took Xavier Thomas at par in pick 239, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A straight-up fair deal on Carson Steele at slot 247, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
