They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Jayden Daniels is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
They will need Hartman to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Coleman.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 9 they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
In the 21st pick they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They did well to land Tyler Guyton in pick 34, just ahead of his grade. It fills a real need, too.
T'Vondre Sweat in No. 43 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
You do not let a wide receiver like Keon Coleman reach the Round 3 slot and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Legette at the 73rd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No edge and no loss on Calen Bullock in pick No. 75; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Braelon Allen at Round 4, Pick 2 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They took Matt Goncalves at par in the 108th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Johnny Wilson at the Round 4 slot is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Marist Liufau at pick No. 139 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Luke McCaffrey at No. 161 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No drama and no debate, Dwight McGlothern went about where he belonged in the 176th pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Caedan Wallace in slot 179 is fair value, right on his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for JD Bertrand in Round 6, Pick 29, and that is fine. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
A conviction pick on Trey Knox at pick 226 that the board grades a round light. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They let Michael Barrett come to them and pounced at pick No. 231. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Ethan Driskell at No. 236 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Sam Hartman in the Round 7 slot, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
