The tape said wait; the Cowboys did not. Zion Logue went at No. 226, a good 45 picks before the board was ready.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. The Jamaree Salyer deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.5 · Pick 37 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 73
Payton Wilson at the 37th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · Jeremiah Trotter Jr. · LB · rank 64
A conviction pick on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the 56th overall pick that the board grades a round light. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 111
This one needs a full-page explanation: Khyree Jackson in the Round 3 slot, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · McKinnley Jackson · DL · rank 93
McKinnley Jackson in slot 87 is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.5 · Pick 105 · Tykee Smith · S · rank 102
A tidy little value on Tykee Smith in No. 105, a step better than break-even. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R4.24 · Pick 124 · Justin Eboigbe · DL-EDGE · rank 132
A premium they did not need to pay, Justin Eboigbe a notch or two before his time. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R5.38 · Pick 174 · Curtis Jacobs · LB · rank 188
They jumped the gun on Curtis Jacobs, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.8 · Pick 183 · Fentrell Cypress II · CB · rank 211
Fentrell Cypress II in the 183rd pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.37 · Pick 212 · Akheem Mesidor · DL-EDGE · rank 255
They reached into another round for Akheem Mesidor, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
R7.6 · Pick 226 · Zion Logue · DL · rank 271
A real head-scratcher, Zion Logue in slot 226 is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
R7.25 · Pick 245 · Steele Chambers · LB · rank 248
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Steele Chambers. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
