The Chargers lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. They will need Monheim to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The Cooper pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 6 they get a blindside protector at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick 30 they get a go-to option on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tyler Nubin in the 37th pick. A minor itch, scratched.
Good price on Kris Jenkins in the Round 2 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Edgerrin Cooper slipping to the 69th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Fair-plus on Caelen Carson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Audric Estime in Round 4, Pick 5 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A straight-up fair deal on Jaylin Simpson at No. 142, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They jumped the gun on Jonah Monheim, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A need, and now a little less of one.
A premium they did not need to pay, Bryson Nesbit a notch or two before his time. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A reach on Matthew Jones in slot 226; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
