Nobody else had Jarquez Hunter anywhere near the 170th overall pick. The Cowboys did, by 157 spots, and that gap is the whole story. It washes out to a C+, no better and no worse.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Lawson. A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
If Xavier Watts and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 16 they get a rangy last line of defense, reach and all. Need was not the driver here.
Kaleb Johnson in pick 47 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Derrick Harmon slipping to the 78th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Deontae Lawson at the Round 4 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Germie Bernard at pick No. 153 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Haynes King in No. 169 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A real head-scratcher, Jarquez Hunter in slot 170 is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
They talked themselves into Alfred Collins at the Round 5 slot, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A big swing on Terrance Ferguson at pick 189, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jimmy Horn Jr. at the 208th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
