Dallas Cowboys

A weekend that raised as many questions as it answered. The Cowboys get a C+.

Nobody else had Jarquez Hunter anywhere near the 170th overall pick. The Cowboys did, by 157 spots, and that gap is the whole story. It washes out to a C+, no better and no worse.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Lawson. A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want.

On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.

If Xavier Watts and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.16 · Pick 16 · Xavier Watts · S · rank 28
In slot 16 they get a rangy last line of defense, reach and all. Need was not the driver here.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Kaleb Johnson · RB · rank 55
Kaleb Johnson in pick 47 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Derrick Harmon · DT · rank 70
Derrick Harmon slipping to the 78th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.16 · Pick 117 · Deontae Lawson · LB · rank 88
Deontae Lawson at the Round 4 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.15 · Pick 153 · Germie Bernard · WR · rank 247
Germie Bernard at pick No. 153 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.31 · Pick 169 · Haynes King · QB · rank 232
Haynes King in No. 169 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.32 · Pick 170 · Jarquez Hunter · RB · rank 327
A real head-scratcher, Jarquez Hunter in slot 170 is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
R5.33 · Pick 171 · Alfred Collins · DL · rank 219
They talked themselves into Alfred Collins at the Round 5 slot, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.14 · Pick 189 · Terrance Ferguson · TE · rank 246
A big swing on Terrance Ferguson at pick 189, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R6.33 · Pick 208 · Jimmy Horn Jr. · WR · rank 263
Jimmy Horn Jr. at the 208th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
