When the story of this class is written, it opens with Jamaree Caldwell at No. 170, a reach of 106 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
Getting Brooks where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 15th pick they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
The board fumbled Emeka Egbuka all the way to pick 46, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Dylan Sampson at pick No. 77 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
They robbed the room for Smael Mondon Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A wild overpay on Seth McLaughlin in slot 168, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A big swing on Jamaree Caldwell at Round 5, Pick 32, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Trey Zuhn III in Round 5, Pick 33 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Somehow Michael Taaffe was still sitting there in the Round 6 slot, and they pounced on premier safety value. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Tahj Brooks in pick No. 209, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Micah Morris at pick 248 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
