You can hear the double-takes from here. The Bears took Dasan McCullough at pick No. 257, roughly 66 spots before his name belonged. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
Bell falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a three-down second-level presence, and a steal at that.
They did well to land A.J. Haulcy in Round 2, Pick 25, just ahead of his grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Lee Hunter at slot 62 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Connor Lew at pick 89 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jalon Kilgore at the 111th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
You do not let a wide receiver like Skyler Bell reach No. 129 and blink. They did not. It fills a real need, too.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Miles Kitselman in pick No. 239. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Jack Pyburn at No. 241 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Dasan McCullough at Round 7, Pick 41 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
