The Commanders did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Ryan Fitzgerald fell into pick 250.
If Hassanein pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 29 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker, and a steal at that. More want than need.
Value said wait; Donovan Jackson in pick No. 61 says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A wild overpay on Ahmed Hassanein in the 102nd overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Steal is underselling it; Savion Williams at Round 4, Pick 18 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Mello Dotson at slot 142 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Mason Taylor at No. 148 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Cam Skattebo in the 207th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A linebacker of that caliber at the Round 7 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Ryan Fitzgerald at pick No. 250 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
