The Steelers put a flag in the ground for Sawyer Robertson, 80 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.
They banked enough surplus on Anderson to cover a lot of smaller sins. The linebacker spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The Bowry pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with linebacker and tight end still on the board. On the needs board they went 7 of 9, with quarterback the one that mattered most.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 21 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Lee Hunter in No. 53. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A slide stopped in pick 76, with Zachariah Branch worth more than the price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jalon Kilgore at the Round 3 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Jude Bowry at offensive lineman with linebacker and tight end open.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Bud Clark in the 121st pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Sawyer Robertson at the 135th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Value with a capital V on Kaytron Allen in slot 161, a genuine coup. It fills a real need, too.
Circle this one: Aaron Anderson at the Round 6 slot is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Jeremiah Wright went about where he belonged in pick 224. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They talked themselves into Jack Pyburn at the 230th overall pick, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jadon Canady in No. 237 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A need, and now a little less of one.
