You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Kamran James in No. 218. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C-.
However the rest shakes out, Stowers at that price is a win they earned. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
If Sonny Styles and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Sonny Styles in the Round 1 slot, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
In Round 1, Pick 26 they get a ballhawk on the back end, even if it was a touch early.
A wild overpay on Caden Curry in pick 75, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A real head-scratcher, Tacario Davis in No. 92 is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They barely believed it either: Eli Stowers still on the board at pick No. 94. It fills a real need, too.
Isaiah World at the 112th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ja'Kobi Lane in the Round 4 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Zxavian Harris in Round 5, Pick 12 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Value said wait; VJ Payne in slot 177 says they were not listening. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
No drama and no debate, Kaleb Elarms-Orr went about where he belonged in the 180th overall pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A big swing on Kamran James at the 218th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
