Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys robbed the room for Golday. Final grade: C-.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Cowboys watched Jake Golday slide 50 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.

If Sapp pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

The Cowboys indulged a want in Sapp while a need in quarterback stayed open.

Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.18 · Pick 18 · Sonny Styles · LB · rank 11
In pick 18 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R1.28 · Pick 28 · Zion Young · DE-EDGE · rank 43
In No. 28 they get a double-digit-sack hope, reach and all. More want than need.
R2.17 · Pick 49 · Gennings Dunker · OG · rank 51
A straight-up fair deal on Gennings Dunker at the 49th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R2.27 · Pick 59 · Caleb Banks · DL · rank 42
They let Caleb Banks come to them and pounced at the 59th pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.23 · Pick 87 · Davison Igbinosun · CB · rank 80
Davison Igbinosun at the Round 3 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.28 · Pick 92 · Zakee Wheatley · S · rank 90
They paid sticker price for Zakee Wheatley in pick No. 92, and that is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R3.33 · Pick 97 · Tyreak Sapp · DE-EDGE · rank 135
A want over a need in Round 3, Pick 33: Tyreak Sapp adds an edge rusher while quarterback keeps waiting.
R4.12 · Pick 112 · Jake Golday · OLB · rank 62
A curious use of slot 112. Quarterback needed the pick; an edge rusher in Jake Golday did not.
R5.12 · Pick 152 · Kaytron Allen · RB · rank 149
Kaytron Allen in slot 152 lands just on the right side of the ledger. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.25 · Pick 165 · Kevin Coleman Jr. · WR · rank 165
Kevin Coleman Jr. in the Round 5 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.28 · Pick 168 · VJ Payne · S · rank 200
VJ Payne in Round 5, Pick 28 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
R5.37 · Pick 177 · Tanner Koziol · TE · rank 167
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tanner Koziol at No. 177 is the proof. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.40 · Pick 180 · Jeff Caldwell · WR · rank 193
Jeff Caldwell in pick 180 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
