The Giants torched the value chart for Braden Fiske, taking him 82 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. A weekend to file away and forget, and an F to match.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The DeJean pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with safety, cornerback and other spots still on the board.
They will regret leaving safety for another day if the season turns on it. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left safety open, and the grade is the bill.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 5 they get a blindside protector. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No edge and no loss on Jared Verse in Round 1, Pick 21; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A surprising call. With safety, cornerback and other spots still to address, they spent the 37th overall pick on Cooper DeJean, a defensive back they were not short of.
Brian Thomas Jr. at No. 69 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Fair-plus on Mekhi Wingo, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A big swing on Tyleik Williams at pick No. 85, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Danny Stutsman at Round 4, Pick 5 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A minor need, but a need all the same.
No drama and no debate, MarShawn Lloyd went about where he belonged in No. 142. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Theo Johnson. It fills a real need, too.
Value said wait; Braden Fiske in pick 223 says they were not listening. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
