The Dolphins spent the pick that matters most on Michael Penix Jr., and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
The Nugent reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Job largely done: quarterback settled and 3 of 8 of the wish list covered.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
Michael Penix Jr. is a better player than slot 23 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Kingsley Suamataia in Round 2, Pick 23 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Zak Zinter in the 108th overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 4 slot with a little surplus value in Johnny Wilson. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Beau Brade at No. 158 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Drake Nugent at pick No. 184 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
By-the-book stuff, Julian Pearl at the 198th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
