There is conviction, and then there is this. The Packers took Carson Steele a full 113 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. It washes out to a C, no better and no worse.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Getting Bullard where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
It is not that Bishop is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a press-man option on the boundary, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Graham Barton is a better player than the 41st overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Johnny Wilson in pick No. 57 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Javon Bullard in pick 88 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They paid up for Braelon Allen at slot 96 when waiting would have done the job. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A big swing on Tommy Eichenberg at Round 4, Pick 14, well ahead of any board in the building. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A real head-scratcher, Javon Foster in the 116th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kris Abrams-Draine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Cole Bishop while clear needs at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots sat open.
Layden Robinson in the 161st overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Carson Steele. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
