The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Devin Neal, the No. 88 name on the board, in the 143rd overall pick. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. The Patriots paired the rookies with proven help, Pat Surtain II leading the way.

Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.14 · Pick 14 · Abdul Carter · DE · rank 8
In the 14th pick they get a double-digit-sack hope. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R1.16 · Pick 16 · Wyatt Milum · OT · rank 14
They took Wyatt Milum at par in pick 16, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R1.21 · Pick 21 · Will Campbell · OT · rank 17
Will Campbell at Round 1, Pick 21 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Josh Simmons · OT · rank 25
A quiet steal in pick No. 40: Josh Simmons for less than the market said. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R2.14 · Pick 46 · Emeka Egbuka · WR · rank 23
The board fumbled Emeka Egbuka all the way to the 46th overall pick, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Tyler Booker · OG · rank 38
Tyler Booker at the Round 3 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · LT Overton · DE · rank 52
They robbed the room for LT Overton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.6 · Pick 107 · Tacario Davis · CB · rank 98
Nice patience on Tacario Davis, who had no business lasting to slot 107. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R4.16 · Pick 117 · Sebastian Castro · S · rank 92
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Sebastian Castro in slot 117, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.17 · Pick 118 · Parker Brailsford · C · rank 127
They paid a round early for Parker Brailsford in the 118th overall pick, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.5 · Pick 143 · Devin Neal · RB · rank 88
A running back of that caliber at pick No. 143 is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.14 · Pick 152 · Smael Mondon Jr. · LB · rank 113
Smael Mondon Jr. in pick 152 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R7.37 · Pick 251 · Shilo Sanders · S · rank 256
Shilo Sanders in No. 251 is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
