Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Cowboys spent Round 5, Pick 31 on Anthony Belton, a name the board had a full 79 spots lower. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D+.
The Kiser value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
Everything downstream of Shedeur Sanders depends on Shedeur Sanders, and the building knows it. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They will answer for taking safety early while cornerback and tight end went begging.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 1 they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
In No. 12 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They reached a country mile for Donovan Jackson at the 35th pick, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They barely believed it either: Nick Emmanwori still on the board at the 44th overall pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A wild overpay on Ajani Cornelius in slot 74, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Omarr Norman-Lott at pick 76 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
A real head-scratcher, Jordan Burch in the 81st overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They bypassed pressing needs at cornerback and tight end to take Xavier Watts, a safety that was not the priority.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, TreVeyon Henderson in No. 109, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A linebacker of that caliber at Round 4, Pick 11 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Danny Stutsman in the 118th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Tez Johnson at the Round 5 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Anthony Belton at slot 168 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They will replay Cam Skattebo at pick 170 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Theo Wease Jr. at the 173rd overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reach for Ty Hamilton in Round 6, Pick 11; a little patience would have been rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They talked themselves into KJ Jefferson at No. 209, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Circle this one: Jack Kiser at slot 248 is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
