The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Cowboys reached some 124 spots for Tyler Batty, and value like that does not grow back.
Getting Mondon Jr. where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They have staked the next five years on Shedeur Sanders, which is the only story that really matters here. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
It is not that Styles is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first. A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 2nd overall pick they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a go-to option on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
Donovan Jackson at No. 33 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They talked themselves into Ajani Cornelius at Round 2, Pick 12, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A straight-up fair deal on Andrew Mukuba at pick 67, value and slot in agreement. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tez Johnson this early at slot 74. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nice patience on Alfred Collins, who had no business lasting to the Round 3 slot. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jihaad Campbell at Round 3, Pick 30 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A want over a need in the 102nd pick: Sonny Styles adds a safety while cornerback and tight end keeps waiting.
Value said wait; Rylie Mills in slot 107 says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
TreVeyon Henderson in No. 109 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Tory Horton is a better player than pick 112 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for DJ Campbell. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board fumbled Cam Skattebo all the way to pick No. 148, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
KJ Jefferson at the Round 5 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Danny Stutsman in the 170th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A big swing on Tyler Batty at No. 173, well ahead of any board in the building. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A linebacker of that caliber at pick No. 186 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Raheim Sanders at pick 209 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jamaree Caldwell at Round 7, Pick 32 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
