Nobody else had KJ Jefferson anywhere near the Round 5 slot. The Cowboys did, by 114 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Put together, it is a D.
They banked enough surplus on Simon to cover a lot of smaller sins. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up. With cornerback and tight end unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 12 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the Round 1 slot they get protection for the quarterback, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Donovan Jackson well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kyle Kennard. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Taking Xavier Watts in pick No. 74 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
No drama and no debate, Jayden Higgins went about where he belonged in slot 76. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Alfred Collins in the 83rd pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
TreVeyon Henderson in the Round 3 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Tez Johnson in the 88th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They reached into another round for Rylie Mills, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A need, and now a little less of one.
Demetrius Knight Jr. at Round 4, Pick 11 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Sonny Styles at safety with cornerback and tight end open.
A linebacker of that caliber at pick 148 is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Cam Skattebo at slot 168 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It fills a real need, too.
Amari Kight at slot 170 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They reached a country mile for KJ Jefferson at Round 5, Pick 36, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They will replay Cody Simon at the Round 6 slot for years; that is how good the value is. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Raheim Sanders in the 197th overall pick, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jasheen Davis at pick No. 209 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jamaree Caldwell this early at No. 248. The roster fit checks out.
