Washington Commanders

Daniels is the plan now, and the Commanders grade out a B+.

They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Jayden Daniels is the Commanders' quarterback, full stop. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Reaching for Eichenberg left real value on the table behind him.

Spending an early pick on linebacker with tight end and interior defensive lineman open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. Sainristil at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.4 · Pick 4 · Jayden Daniels · QB · rank 8
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A real need, handled.
R1.26 · Pick 26 · Troy Fautanu · OT · rank 30
Troy Fautanu at the 26th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 34
A straight-up fair deal on Chris Braswell at the 35th pick, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Adonai Mitchell · WR · rank 36
They paid sticker price for Adonai Mitchell in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Quinyon Mitchell · CB · rank 35
Quinyon Mitchell at pick No. 40 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 70
By-the-book stuff, Payton Wilson at No. 68 squarely in line with his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 83
Mike Sainristil slipping to pick 100 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 126
A want over a need in slot 102: Tommy Eichenberg adds a linebacker while tight end and interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · Dylan Laube · RB · rank 142
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dylan Laube. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Christian Jones · OT · rank 190
Christian Jones at Round 6, Pick 6 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Matthew Jones · OG · rank 233
The board had cheaper options than Matthew Jones at the 223rd pick, and it noticed. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
