The Cowboys put a flag in the ground for Zakhari Franklin, 58 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.
That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Kingsley Suamataia in the 56th overall pick, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board had cheaper options than Christian Mahogany at slot 87, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A big swing on Layden Robinson at Round 4, Pick 36, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No drama and no debate, Walter Rouse went about where he belonged in No. 170. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Drake Nugent at the 179th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid a round early for Frank Gore Jr. in pick No. 216, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jordan Whittington at the Round 7 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A wild overpay on Bub Means in slot 233, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They reached into another round for Zakhari Franklin, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Blake Watson this early at pick 244. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
