The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Cowboys reached some 113 spots for Brady Cook, and value like that does not grow back. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
Getting Stutsman where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.
Spending an early pick on safety with cornerback and tight end open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 26th pick they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Donovan Jackson in pick 44, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Fair-plus on Andrew Mukuba, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They talked themselves into Kyle McCord at slot 76, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Deone Walker in No. 81. It fills a real need, too.
They reached a country mile for Rylie Mills at pick No. 90, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
A curious use of pick 100. Cornerback and tight end needed the pick; a safety in Sonny Styles did not.
A straight-up fair deal on Savion Williams at the 109th pick, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Somehow TreVeyon Henderson was still sitting there in Round 4, Pick 11, and they pounced on premier running back value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Brady Cook at No. 125 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
Antwane Wells Jr. in the 148th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They robbed the room for Danny Stutsman here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Cam Skattebo in the Round 5 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Trey Moore. A minor itch, scratched.
Circle this one: Kobe King at pick No. 186 is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They barely believed it either: Raheim Sanders still on the board at the 209th overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jamaree Caldwell at the 248th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
