Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Packers, and the value they bled adds up to real damage. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.
Reaching for Bertrand left real value on the table behind him. The Solomon pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, tight end and other spots still on the board. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
The Beebe pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.29
· Pick 29
· Graham Barton
· OT
· rank 32
In pick No. 29 they get a building block for the line. A real need, handled.
R2.9
· Pick 41
· Tyler Nubin
· S
· rank 33
Tyler Nubin in the 41st pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor itch, scratched.
R2.31
· Pick 63
· Brenden Rice
· WR
· rank 71
The board had cheaper options than Brenden Rice at Round 2, Pick 31, and it noticed. It fills a real need, too.
R3.25
· Pick 88
· Cooper Beebe
· OG
· rank 78
Cooper Beebe at the Round 3 slot is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.29
· Pick 92
· Javon Solomon
· OLB-EDGE
· rank 108
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Javon Solomon at OLB-EDGE with quarterback, tight end and other spots open.
R3.31
· Pick 94
· Kris Abrams-Draine
· CB
· rank 119
Kris Abrams-Draine at slot 94 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.35
· Pick 98
· Will Shipley
· RB
· rank 115
Will Shipley in the 98th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.36
· Pick 99
· Khyree Jackson
· CB
· rank 105
Khyree Jackson at pick 99 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.25
· Pick 125
· Tommy Eichenberg
· LB
· rank 126
By-the-book stuff, Tommy Eichenberg at pick No. 125 squarely in line with his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R4.28
· Pick 128
· James Williams
· S
· rank 129
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. James Williams in the 128th overall pick leaves quarterback, tight end and other spots for later.
R4.31
· Pick 131
· Braelon Allen
· RB
· rank 151
Braelon Allen at No. 131 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.35
· Pick 135
· Javon Foster
· OT
· rank 127
The board had Javon Foster higher than the 135th pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.25
· Pick 161
· JD Bertrand
· LB
· rank 189
They talked themselves into JD Bertrand at pick 161, and the board did not agree. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R5.35
· Pick 171
· Braiden McGregor
· DL-EDGE
· rank 198
Value said wait; Braiden McGregor in the Round 5 slot says they were not listening. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
