The tape said wait; the Cowboys did not. Anthony Belton went at the Round 5 slot, a good 81 picks before the board was ready. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D+.
Getting Judkins where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. With cornerback and tight end unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and cornerback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the offensive line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the 12th pick they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tre Harris in slot 34. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Donovan Jackson in pick 44, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jayden Higgins in No. 57 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Xavier Watts at the 65th overall pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
No edge and no loss on Omarr Norman-Lott in pick No. 76; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
Circle this one: Danny Stutsman at pick 103 is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A want over a need in No. 109: Sonny Styles adds a safety while cornerback and tight end keeps waiting.
A wide receiver of that caliber at the 112th pick is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Quinshon Judkins in the 148th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They reached into another round for Anthony Belton, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Theo Wease Jr. at Round 5, Pick 33 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Cam Skattebo at the Round 5 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They will replay Kobe King at No. 186 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached a country mile for KJ Jefferson at the Round 6 slot, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jamaree Caldwell in the 248th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
