The Cowboys treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the 186th pick on Jamaree Caldwell a full 95 spots early. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Mondon Jr.. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The Mukuba pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at cornerback and tight end.
For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and cornerback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 7th overall pick they get a disruptive interior force at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick 12 they get a cornerstone up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Emeka Egbuka in Round 2, Pick 10. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
You do not let a safety like Nick Emmanwori reach pick No. 44 and blink. They did not. A minor itch, scratched.
They talked themselves into Kyle McCord at the 57th pick, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
They went early on Jayden Higgins in No. 67, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid a round early for Jake Majors in the 76th overall pick, more than the board wanted. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Vernon Broughton in pick No. 92 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
They robbed the room for TreVeyon Henderson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A real head-scratcher, Elijah Roberts in No. 109 is miles ahead of his ranking. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They bypassed pressing needs at cornerback and tight end to take Andrew Mukuba, a safety that was not the priority.
Taking Kobe King in pick 148 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board fumbled Smael Mondon Jr. all the way to Round 5, Pick 31, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Theo Wease Jr. at the 170th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Amari Kight in Round 5, Pick 36 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Value said wait; Jamaree Caldwell in pick 186 says they were not listening. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
KJ Jefferson at the 209th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Will Sheppard at No. 248 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
