They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: KJ Jefferson, 103 picks early at the Round 6 slot. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
Jackson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Everything downstream of Cam Ward depends on Cam Ward, and the building knows it.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and cornerback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In slot 12 they get an anchor for the defensive front. A real need, handled.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tre Harris at pick No. 34 is the proof. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They talked themselves into Donovan Jackson at Round 2, Pick 12, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They reached into another round for Ajani Cornelius, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tez Johnson well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Value with a capital V on Alfred Collins in the Round 3 slot, a genuine coup. The roster fit checks out.
Xavier Watts at the 77th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They will replay Demetrius Knight Jr. at No. 103 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board fumbled TreVeyon Henderson all the way to Round 4, Pick 8, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Emery Jones Jr. at the 112th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Theo Wease Jr. in slot 148, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They barely believed it either: Sonny Styles still on the board at pick 168. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Taking Smael Mondon Jr. in pick No. 170 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Cam Skattebo in slot 173 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for KJ Jefferson. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jaishawn Barham slipping to the 209th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Ja'Quinden Jackson in pick No. 248, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
