Nobody else had Braiden McGregor anywhere near the 161st overall pick. The Packers did, by 37 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Little went right, and the F does not pretend otherwise.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The Bishop pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback and tight end still on the board.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Landing Henderson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
There is no soft landing here; this class has to massively overperform just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a building block for the line. A real need, handled.
Tyler Nubin at slot 41 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
By-the-book stuff, Zach Frazier at pick 63 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Johnny Wilson at No. 64 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
McKinnley Jackson at the Round 3 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A wild overpay on Kris Abrams-Draine in pick No. 94, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tommy Eichenberg. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Cole Bishop in pick 125 leaves quarterback and tight end for later.
Will Shipley in the 128th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A conviction pick on Braelon Allen at the Round 4 slot that the board grades a round light. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Braiden McGregor well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
JD Bertrand at the 171st overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
LaDarius Henderson slipping to No. 175 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The roster fit checks out.
