The Cowboys bet big and early on Tyler Batty, 121 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
The Skattebo pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and cornerback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a bendy edge with upside. More want than need.
In pick No. 12 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Donovan Jackson in Round 2, Pick 10 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nick Emmanwori in No. 44 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor itch, scratched.
A wild overpay on Ajani Cornelius in pick 57, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached a country mile for Kyle McCord at the 76th overall pick, and the board is aghast. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They read the board right and Jayden Higgins was the payoff at the 92nd pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, TreVeyon Henderson in pick No. 108, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A real head-scratcher, Rylie Mills in the 109th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Smael Mondon Jr. in Round 5, Pick 11 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Theo Wease Jr. at slot 168 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Nazir Stackhouse at pick 170 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It fills a real need, too.
A big swing on Quinn Carroll at the Round 5 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Tyler Batty in No. 186 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Steal is underselling it; Cam Skattebo at No. 209 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They robbed the room for Jaishawn Barham here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
