Call it belief, call it a gut call, but KJ Jefferson at Round 6, Pick 34 is 88 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.
On value alone, Mondon Jr. makes the weekend a net positive. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
The Watts pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at cornerback and tight end. A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
Tre Harris at slot 12 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
In the 21st pick they get a building block for the line, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Nick Emmanwori in pick No. 44 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Kyle Kennard at the 52nd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Xavier Watts adds a safety and leaves cornerback and tight end untouched.
Value with a capital V on Alfred Collins in No. 76, a genuine coup. The roster fit checks out.
They liked Tez Johnson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 83. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Emery Jones Jr. at Round 4, Pick 8 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board fumbled TreVeyon Henderson all the way to the 112th pick, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 121, where Savion Williams graded well above the range. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Vernon Broughton in the 148th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Danny Stutsman at No. 168 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Somehow Sonny Styles was still sitting there in slot 170, and they pounced on premier safety value. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Circle this one: Cam Skattebo at the Round 5 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They will replay Smael Mondon Jr. at the Round 6 slot for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
KJ Jefferson at No. 209 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Damien Martinez at pick 248 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
