Somebody took the Packers to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.
The cost of the Abrams-Draine reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The Packers indulged a want in Williams while a need in quarterback and tight end stayed open.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. James at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.25
· Pick 25
· Jordan Morgan
· OT
· rank 27
In pick No. 25 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.9
· Pick 41
· Kamren Kinchens
· S
· rank 25
The board had Kamren Kinchens higher than the 41st overall pick, and the safety fell to them anyway. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R2.31
· Pick 63
· Zach Frazier
· C
· rank 65
A straight-up fair deal on Zach Frazier at the 63rd pick, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
R2.32
· Pick 64
· Johnny Wilson
· WR
· rank 75
They went early on Johnny Wilson in pick 64, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.25
· Pick 88
· D.J. James
· CB
· rank 64
They barely believed it either: D.J. James still on the board at slot 88. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.29
· Pick 92
· McKinnley Jackson
· DL
· rank 88
Fair-plus on McKinnley Jackson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.31
· Pick 94
· Marshawn Kneeland
· DE-EDGE
· rank 106
They liked Marshawn Kneeland enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 94. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.32
· Pick 95
· Kris Abrams-Draine
· CB
· rank 118
They reached a country mile for Kris Abrams-Draine at slot 95, and the board is aghast. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.35
· Pick 98
· Zak Zinter
· OG
· rank 94
Zak Zinter in pick No. 98 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.25
· Pick 125
· James Williams
· S
· rank 130
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with James Williams while clear needs at quarterback and tight end sat open.
R4.32
· Pick 132
· Will Shipley
· RB
· rank 129
A reasonable price with a little left over, Will Shipley in pick 132. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.34
· Pick 134
· Braelon Allen
· RB
· rank 151
They paid a round early for Braelon Allen in the 134th overall pick, more than the board wanted. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.35
· Pick 135
· Cedric Gray
· LB
· rank 131
Good price on Cedric Gray in the Round 4 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
