Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent Round 6, Pick 34 on Tyler Batty, a name most had 98 spots down the list. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
Mondon Jr. falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Spending an early pick on safety with cornerback and tight end open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and cornerback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a No. 1 receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
In pick No. 12 they get a load in the middle at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Donovan Jackson at No. 37 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Ajani Cornelius in slot 44 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They will replay Emeka Egbuka at pick 57 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kyle McCord. The roster fit checks out.
Alfred Collins in slot 73 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Kevin Winston Jr. at No. 76 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
TreVeyon Henderson at the Round 4 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They bypassed pressing needs at cornerback and tight end to take Sonny Styles, a safety that was not the priority.
Steal is underselling it; Demetrius Knight Jr. at pick 112 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Theo Wease Jr. at the 148th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They talked themselves into DJ Campbell at Round 5, Pick 31, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They robbed the room for Cam Skattebo here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They barely believed it either: Smael Mondon Jr. still on the board at pick No. 173. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Raheim Sanders in the 186th pick, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
A wild overpay on Tyler Batty in No. 209, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A minor itch, scratched.
A big swing on Jamaree Caldwell at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
