The Chargers clearly saw something nobody else did in Cody Schrader, taking him 32 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Newton falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 6 they get a mismatch in the passing game. A real need, handled.
They robbed the room for Jer'Zhan Newton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid sticker price for Johnny Wilson in Round 3, Pick 6, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Donovan Edwards at the 106th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A real head-scratcher, Ben Sinnott in slot 143 is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Cody Schrader at the Round 6 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Sam Hartman at the Round 7 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
