This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Jaylen Wright, the No. 154 name on the board, stolen at the 172nd overall pick. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
They will need Proctor to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Job largely done: cornerback settled and 6 of 9 of the wish list covered. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 22 they get an island corner. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Adisa Isaac in pick No. 50 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jeremiah Trotter Jr.. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They paid sticker price for Blake Fisher in the 97th overall pick, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They did well to land Cedric Gray in No. 137, just ahead of his grade. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
They talked themselves into Josh Proctor at slot 163, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
You do not let a running back like Jaylen Wright reach Round 5, Pick 36 and blink. They did not. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
By-the-book stuff, Aki Ogunbiyi at the 178th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Joshua Cephus in the Round 7 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
