You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Akheem Mesidor in Round 6, Pick 34. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
The Mondon Jr. value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
The Winston Jr. pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at cornerback, quarterback and other spots. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, cornerback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 12 they get a building block for the line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
A safety of that caliber at the 44th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They reached into another round for Donovan Jackson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They reached a country mile for Jayden Higgins at pick No. 57, and the board is aghast. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Ajani Cornelius in the Round 3 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Omarr Norman-Lott in slot 81. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Kevin Winston Jr. adds a safety and leaves cornerback, quarterback and other spots untouched.
They robbed the room for TreVeyon Henderson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Taking Sonny Styles in slot 148 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
They took Dont'e Thornton Jr. at par in pick No. 168, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board fumbled Cam Skattebo all the way to pick 170, and they scooped it up. The roster fit checks out.
A premium they did not need to pay, Nazir Stackhouse a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Somehow Smael Mondon Jr. was still sitting there in the 186th pick, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Akheem Mesidor at the 209th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jaishawn Barham in slot 248 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
