Boards are made to be trusted, and the Cowboys shredded theirs for KJ Jefferson. He came off 101 spots early, and the room will hear about it. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
Sanders at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Spending an early pick on safety with cornerback and tight end open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a matchup problem out wide. The biggest hole, addressed.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Nick Emmanwori in No. 44, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Ajani Cornelius at pick No. 51 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They did well to land Tyleik Williams in the Round 2 slot, just ahead of his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Jake Majors at slot 76 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jayden Higgins at the Round 3 slot is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Sonny Styles in the 109th overall pick leaves cornerback and tight end for later.
They will replay TreVeyon Henderson at No. 112 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
Somehow Danny Stutsman was still sitting there in Round 5, Pick 11, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached into another round for CJ West, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
PJ Williams at pick 170 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Smael Mondon Jr. at the 173rd pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jordan Hancock in Round 6, Pick 11 is fair value, right on his grade. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
A real head-scratcher, Barryn Sorrell in pick No. 189 is miles ahead of his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
KJ Jefferson in No. 195 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They barely believed it either: Cam Skattebo still on the board at the 209th pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Raheim Sanders at slot 248 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
