The real work happened on the phones. The Chargers fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
Reaching for Singer left real value on the table behind him. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th pick they get a building block for the line. A real need, handled.
Nothing to complain about; Leonard Taylor III went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They liked T'Vondre Sweat enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 44. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They took Johnny Wilson at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
TreVeyon Henderson at pick No. 72 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board had Roman Wilson higher than the 106th overall pick, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They went early on Darius Robinson in Round 5, Pick 7, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jaylan Ford in slot 145 is fair value, right on his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Ty'Ron Hopper at the Round 6 slot. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They paid a round early for Cody Schrader in the 227th overall pick, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They reached a country mile for Dorian Singer at Round 7, Pick 13, and the board is aghast. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
