You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Chargers did exactly that with Johnny Wilson in the 37th pick. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
That Wilson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The Kaden Elliss pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 8 they get a run-stuffing presence up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Johnny Wilson at the Round 2 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reach on Blake Corum in the 69th pick; the board had better options right there. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Roman Wilson at slot 105 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reach for Darius Robinson in No. 142; a little patience would have been rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A clean, defensible pick in the 183rd overall pick with a little surplus value in Sam Hartman. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They went early on Cody Schrader in Round 7, Pick 6, and the value did not follow. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
