Nobody else had Cody Schrader anywhere near No. 183. The Chargers did, by 55 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
Spending an early pick on DT-EDGE with interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
The Wilson steal is the beam this whole class leans on. On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 5 they get a red-zone target to build around. A clean fit for the roster.
They took Chop Robinson at par in No. 37, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 3 slot on Maason Smith with interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots unsolved.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Roman Wilson at the 105th overall pick is the proof. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board had cheaper options than Darius Robinson at slot 142, and it noticed. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Cody Schrader in Round 6, Pick 8 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dorian Singer in the Round 7 slot, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
